WILTA is committed to supporting the teaching and learning of Indonesian in Western Australia. WILTA members are not only Indonesian educators working in the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors but also students and community members who are also passionate about learning and teaching Indonesian. Many WILTA members have formed lasting connections with Indonesia. Some were fortunate enough to study in Indonesia during their university years, such as Lisa, Indonesian teacher at Mandurah Senior College. Lisa is pictured here with her Ibu Kos who she had the pleasure of catching up with during the WILTA Sumatra tour, 10 years after completing her studies at Universitas Negeri Padang.
A contingent from WA attended the Australian Society of Indonesian Language Educators conference held in Sydney on 14-15 July. This was the first time the ASILE Committee drew on volunteers across different states to organise the conference, and what an amazing job they did. Read more about the ASILE conference here.
The WILTA group was warmly welcomed to SMPN3 in Bukit Tinggi by teachers and students. There was great excitement as WILTA members visited classes and spent time with students, sharing stories about Australia and giving oleh-oleh. The group also networked with local teachers, further strengthening connections between Indonesia and WA.
WILTA and the Balai Bahasa are proud supporters of the Language Assistant Program in Government Schools. In this program, young Indonesians are sponsored to work as (highly valued!) teacher assistants in government schools. Read the surat dari Bobby, a 2009 LAP participant here.
The Perth Balai Bahasa Indonesia is running an Indoensian film Festival with some groundbreaking new movies directly from Indonesia to us. The festival is from Friday 9 September – Monday 12 September 2011 at Hoyts Garden City. Please visit www.balaibahasaperth.org for more details on this exciting event.

Indonesian DVDs now available for loan
As many WILTA members know, it is very difficult to get a hold of Indonesian viewing resources in Perth. The Indonesian film industry is still in its infancy, having been restricted during the Suharto years, and although there is a wealth of materials available on the web, there are few ‘professional’ extended viewing texts available that do not infringe copyright. Unlike other languages which have good representation on the foreign language shelves of JBHiFi and in the television guide of SBS, Indonesian films are particularly difficult to find. Thanks to AISWA and the NALSSP, there is now a selection of Indonesian DVDs available for loan from The Grove Library (the new library on Stirling Hwy http://thegrovelibrary.net/). The DVDs can also be requested through local library branches. AISWA member school teachers have access to an extended range of films (and multiple copies of popular titles) - talk to Ibu Hara to find out more. To read more about the DVDs available for loan and to see the full list of titles, click here.
