EXPRESSION OF INTEREST TO HOST

WILTA is once again seeking expressions of interest from members who wish to have an Indonesia Australia Language Foundation (IALF) Bali teacher as a short term language assistant in their classroom for a week at the start of Term 2  2012.  Preference will be given to applicants who are also able to host Bapak/Ibu guru in their home during their time in Western Australia.

The focus of the visit will be to work in Indonesian language classes across all phases of learning, as a classroom assistant.  The RTV teacher will also be working with WILTA members in providing a professional development session at our May Weekend Workshop.  In return, a WILTA teacher will visit the IALF Bali in January 2012. Application information will be available shortly.

The RTV to Perth will occur during Weeks 1 to 5 of Term 2, 2012.

If you are interested in hosting the RTV teacher for a few days (up to one week) please complete the following expression of interest form below or print a copy and and return to:

Creating Viewing Tasks

Following the successful Viewing Tasks PD on 15 April 2011 at the Consulate-General of Indonesia, this workshop will showcase viewing materials that have been created for the Stage 2 and 3 Indonesian WACE course and review strategies for selecting viewing texts and creating tasks.

In Malang my intention was to “drop in” at school each day, help with English classes and observe the way that Indonesian language and Civics are taught.  Teachers in the staff room whom I had met on our school visit last April welcomed me warmly and treated me as a colleague.  My “saat paling memalukan” was in a Kewarganegaraan class when I was asked to comment for the students on an aspect of the Indonesian Constitution compared with the Australian Constitution.  Waduh, I had no idea.  But then, I’m an Indonesian teacher, not a history teacher!

Again I was impressed by the bustling city of Malang, built by the Dutch (so full of impressive old buildings) and a university town.  The climate is cool and pleasant and the surrounding mountains quite beautiful.  And the food!  There was an amazing variety of jajan and sweet desserts around every corner.  Aduh for my waistline.

But the main reason for my visit to Indonesia this time was of course the RTV (Reciprocal Teacher Visit).  This was the 2nd part of the 2010-2011exchange between WILTA and the IALF, following the visit by Ibu Anik during October-November.  I was placed in Bangli, a delightful small town about 1.5 hours from Denpasar and not too far from Gianyar on the Kintamani road.  The school was SMAN1 Bangli and they were very excited about having a native speaker in their midst.  It was a very rewarding experience – for the full account, please see Warta WILTA.

But it wasn’t just me in Indonesia over the holidays!!  The Endeavour Language Teacher Fellowships Indonesian course was taking place at the IALF in Denpasar, led by Ibu Karen and Ibu Rini, and comprising Indonesian teachers from across Australia.  The ELTF report can be read in Warta WILTA.

And at the same time in Yogyakarta, the ILTI (Indonesian Language Teacher Immersion) course was taking place at Sanata Dharma University in Yogyakarta.  They had a packed schedule and by all accounts a wonderful experience.  See Prof David Reeve’s summary in Warta WILTA.

It’s now time to renew your WILTA membership, either direct through the website www.wilta.org or via MLTAWA at www.mltawa.org.  Also, don’t forget to register for our first workshop for the year Tuesday 8 March – coming up soon!  We will be entertained by the fabulous Feni Bembridge as she tackles that super-important issue: languages and literacy, then enjoy a delicious Indonesian meal at Tasik Restaurant.

Sampai ketemu di WILTA ya!

Salam hangat

Sue

An Exciting Professional Development Opportunity

(available to WILTA members only!)

Funding is available to a WILTA member to travel to Bali for a three-week professional development opportunity during January 2012 and work with the Indonesian Australian Language Foundation (IALF) and a local school. Is 2012 your year for the RTV?

WILTA has established the Reciprocal Teacher Visit programme to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Provide opportunitiesfor teachers to participate in a teaching role whilst being immersed in the everyday interactions of an Indonesian classroom.
  • Provide opportunities for our own student learners of Indonesian to experience the benefits of classroom interaction with a background speaker of the Indonesian language.
  • Provide opportunities for professional development both linguistically and socio-culturally.
  • Enhance the profile of Languages and WILTA within our schools and the wider community.
  • Establish an ongoing relationship with an Indonesian teaching organization.
  • Increase international awareness of the education systems within Western Australia.

Here’s what you will do:

  • Teach several classes of English at the Indonesia Australia Language Foundation.
  • Be attached to a school (primary or secondary-depending on the recipient’s area of expertise) to teach English. WILTA will negotiate the teaching load on your behalf.
  • Follow your own plan of professional development, for example, resource development, development of collegiate networks, Indonesian language study or any other form determined in consultation with the selection committee.
  • Provide feedback to WILTA in the form of a journal or formal report and a completed evaluation sheet.
  • Participate in the management or administration of the WILTA Reciprocal Teacher Visit programme in the following year as well as contributing to the development of a file on the programme.

WILTA will pay for

  • Return airfare, departure tax and travel insurance.
  • Accommodation: one week in a home stay and two weeks in a hotel chosen by WILTA.
  • Weekly expenses allowance of $200. All expenses need to be documented or receipted, with surplus funds being re-allocated to the WILTA account for future Reciprocal Teacher visits.

Eligibility criteria:

  • possess a recognised teaching qualification
  • be currently employed in Indonesian language education in Western Australia
  • have been a member of WILTA for at least 12 months prior to making the application.
