Indomedia is a
free magazine, available from selected outlets around Perth. If you would like
copies of it delivered to your school, please contact Puspa at,
mailto:pusp@mail.com to arrange this (a small fee for postage and handling
applies). This monthly magazine is full of a wide range of print text types
using formal and informal language; advertisements, job vacancies, biographies,
gossip columns, quizzes, competitions, articles, film/DVD/CD reviews, riddles
and teasers, jokes and more...
Below this article are two task sheets that you may
download. I created the task sheets firstly to get students to scan the May
edition of the magazine in its entirety (questions 1.10), then focus more
closely on one text (questions A-D).
The June 2005 edition of Indomedia
includes an article and photos of the 2005 Term 2 WILTA workshop.

Swapping Lives...
Whilst this resource is not a language learning resource it is a useful
for teachers to share with colleagues across the curriculum for an integrated
approach and to complement the bahasa Indonesia learning program. It is
suitable for secondary students.
Swapping Lives
is an intimate and confronting story of the Muslim experience told by an
Australian girl as she totally swaps lives and cultures - with an Indonesian
Muslim girl her own age
For ten intensive weeks,
nineteen-year-old Violet leaves her Australian life behind her as she
experiences first-hand the life of Dewi - living in her Muslim family home in
bustling Yogjakarta, Indonesia. At the same time, Dewi takes up residence with
Violet's family in the Sydney suburb of Clovelly.
Both girls have a small video
camera that they use to complete a series of 'encounters'.
The encounters are cultural tasks aimed at demystifying our differences by
creating greater understanding. They range from speaking intimately with Muslim
women about the Hijab (Muslim headscarf), sex, relationships and Islam, to
exploring global issues such as the rise of terrorism, the Bali bomb, and the
Tsunami. While Violet learns about the faith and fears of young Muslims, Dewi
tries to understand the sometimes confusing values and morals of her new
Australian friends. In
Swapping Lives,
both girls truly learn to walk in each other's shoes and record their
experiences themselves. Ultimately, they are seeking to challenge the damaging
public perceptions that often associate intolerance and discrimination with
Australians - and violence and instability with Indonesian Muslims. Their
journeys were delivered to an Australian and international audience through a
seven week interactive documentary on the SBS website, online forums, the SBS
documentary screened in September 2005 and a webcast forum.
The production company 6moons
Interactive will be shortly releasing a DVD of Swapping LIves. For useful
information on integrating Swapping Lives across the curriculum (including a
study guide for teachers) visit the website
http://www20.sbs.com.au/swappinglives/index.php
At its heart, the Swapping Lives
project is an act of faith; it's a vote of confidence in the ability of young
people to engage in some of the most important multicultural issues of our day.
Swapping Lives offers the potential for a small but - hopefully - positive step
forward towards understanding.
