Upacara Bendera 2023

17/8/2023

Congratulations to Ibu Listiana Operananta and her team for a moving and uplifting Upacara Bendera today celebrating Hari Kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia, the 78th anniversary of the Declaration of Indonesian Independence.

Four school groups attended the ceremony and joined in the games and lunch afterwards:
  • Sekolah Margie, Surabaya - in Perth visiting Mater Dei College and JS Roe ACS
  • Kalamunda Senior High School
  • Mater Dei College
  • Wesley College
The students responded well to the formality of the occasion, represented their schools with pride and used their Indonesian language skills to chat with guests. If you ever have an opportunity to join in the Upacara Bendera, especially on Hari Kemerdekaan, take it and take your students with you.

AGM 2021 Summary!

24/11/2021

On Saturday the 30th of October we had our AGM 2021 and our Professional Learning Workshop, presented by Ibu Indah Hixon and Ibu Danielle Cook. We thank Pak Grant and Ibu Laura for making the Wandjoo Miya at Wesley available for us to hold this AGM.
Ibu Danielle Horne the president of WILTA was present and conducted the AGM.

It was a relaxing and friendly day for all the members. Members were enriched by new and fresh ideas for classroom activities which were presented by Ibu Indah Hixon and Ibu Danielle Cook.

Ibu Indah showed an effective strategy called ‘Connecting Body and Mind’. teaching and learning a Language through gestures and movement. This strategy has proven to be effective to enhance students learning. Ibu Indah demonstrated phrases, colours, numbers, prepositions, verb, adjective using her ‘made- up’ gestures as well as gestures that she adapted from AIM and AUSLAN. It was nice to see a video of her singing a song with gestures and her class during a lesson.

Ibu Danielle showed a session on how to use Minecraft for TL. She has given great information on how it is set up and how it functions. Ibu Danielle also shared her reflection of her students work and achievement through a Minecraft tasks.

Teachers had a chance to mingle with others over a nice morning tea, which then was followed by the AGM, where the 2022 WILTA Committee was confirmed.

Special thanks to Ibu Emma Chand who has provided us with an authentic dish for lunch. We look forward to seeing you all continue your membership with WILTA as 2022 should be an exciting year of events.

At the AGM, Ibu Presiden made the very concerning point that WILTA is one of only three remaining state Indonesian Language Teacher associations in Australia, and due to low numbers, could very easily follow. There are still a couple of committee positions left, so please, if you can contribute, do. If not, ideas, requests and feedback are always welcome via form.

Kompetisi Klip Klip 2021 Results!

3/11/2021

Dari Koordinator Kompetisi Klip2Kepada Anggota WILTA yang terhormat,
As the Competitions Coordinator, I want to thank you for your support for what has been another successful Kompetisi Klip-Klip in 2021.  We had 30 entries from 9 different Schools and have awarded 7 cash prizes. The improved spontaneous nature of many of the videos and good participation rate demonstrates that members understand the purpose of the competition:
  • Promote the importance and improve the confidence of students using Indonesian to communicate meaning spontaneously.
  • Raise the profile of Indonesian Language Learning in Western Australian Schools amongst teachers, students and the wider community.
WILTA wishes to thank the Konsulat Jenderal Republik Indonesia for their generous sponsorship of Kompetisi Klip-Klip this year. We also wish to acknowledge our fantastic judges: Moya McLoughlin and Karen Bailey, who volunteered their time to mark all videos entered. Here are 4 thoughts to ponder for the 2022 competition:
  1. Don’t forget to join WILTA nice and early in 2022. The benefits start straight away and we have some big ideas for how we can support you next year. You only get the KK2 information if you are a member
  2. Tell your students. If you knew about KK2 this year, but ran out of time to plan an entry, use the very effective student reminder system. Tell all of your classes about the competition and prizes as soon as it opens. In my experience, your students will then remind you every lesson after that and will even come up with some creative video ideas if you let them.
  3. Spontaneity is the winning focus. Although it is good to plan a suitable time in your program to film, it is not needed. One of the age group winners had less than 20 minutes notice on the last lesson of the term before the due date. They sat in a room without scripting or rehearsing and had a impromptu conversation on the topic that they had just studied, and won a prize. The criteria rewards spontaneity. Trust your students to use repair strategies and show what they know.
  4. Entering is a prize in itself. Students get a massive confidence boost when there is a chance to enter a competition. They don’t need to be a winner to benefit. Try having a class based competition and enter the winners, or enter a student who has a passion for Indonesian just to put a smile on a student's face.
The link to the prize winners is below.
If your School has a winning student, I will be in touch next week regarding prize money transfers. I look forward to seeing an even bigger competition in 2022
Salam hangat,
Grant Porteus

Kompetisi Klip-Klip 2021

8/8/2021

Due to Covid-related funding setbacks, we've been a little late in being able to launch our annual Kompetisi Klip-2 video competition. The good news is - we're ready to go!

The aim of the competition remains promoting and engaging students in authentic, spontaneous language use and meaningful communication within the context of the regular curriculum.  As previously highlighted, competition categories remain the same (Percakapan, Bagaimana Caranya and Wildcard in One Shot) so hopefully many members will have videos ready to go already!

Despite the devastating impact of COVID-19 in Indonesia, the Konsulat Jenderal Republik Indonesia has once again stepped forward to offer WILTA financial support in order to run this event, albeit with more realistic but still very attractive prize money.

Zoom chat

WILTA is hosting Zoom session on the evening of Tuesday 17th August from 7-8pm via Zoom to share ideas, ask questions and put your feet up after a hard but inspiring day celebrating Indonesian Independence Day. BYO drink and nibbles. We are looking at offering Zoom get-togethers as potentially a regular event, so if you'd like to join us in these, please fill in your details here.

Term 2 Long Table Lunch

3/7/2021

A big thank you to everyone who attended our long table lunch on Saturday, 26th June at Tempayan restaurant.  It was lovely to see many new faces and to have the opportunity to meet and listen to the wonderful and inspirational Robbie Gaspar.  It also gave us a chance to socialise, network and enjoy a delicious Indonesian meal with one another.

Robbie spoke of his amazing experiences living and working in Indonesia, including his career as a professional footballer, his passion for the country, as well as learning Indonesian.  He shared many ideas on how to use sport as a hook to engage students with the language and the importance of fostering strong relationships between Australia and Indonesia.

I think everyone walked away with a new perspective and some effective strategies to encourage student engagement.
Tempayan restaurant provided a wonderfully authentic ambience, and the room was abuzz with conversation and laughter.

Thanks again for your attendance and we look forward to seeing you at our next event.

Salam hangat,
Marlee McAdam
PL Coordinator
